Proctors is proud to be the premier theatre destination for the Capital Region and is committed to its mission “Through arts and community leadership be a catalyst for excellence in education, sustainable economic development and rich civic engagement to enhance the quality of life in the greater capital region.” Proctors also has a partnership with Capital Repertory Theatre in Albany and internships may crossover in scope.
Internships are designed for undergraduate or graduate students to have an in-depth experience of working in a not-for-profit theatre company. Training can be supplemented with discussions and workshops with directors, designers and senior staff who provide insight into the overall management of the company. Interns’ relationships with their supervisor ensure that they are not only gaining valuable skills but also receiving support and feedback. Internships are part-time Monday-Friday with occasional nights and weekends (12-20 hours per week). They take place year-round during the Spring, Summer or Fall semesters. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis.

All internships are unpaid, but can count towards educational credit.
Internships at Proctors
This internship reports to the Assistant Finance Director. The Finance Department manages both Proctors and theREP. Responsibilities can include processing cash receipts, accounts payable, posting, monthly department reconciliations, assisting with the budgeting process, contracts administration, preparing for the Theatre’s annual audit and other day-to-day needs of the department. Position affords a window into all aspects of theatre operations plus involvement in activities in other departments. This position is available in the Fall, Spring or Summer. Ideal candidates will be interested in theatre and/or financial management, be detail-oriented, have good interpersonal demeanor and have basic computer and data entry skills.
Company / production management internship
(Not available in summer.)
This intern reports directly to the Production Manager. Responsibilities include assisting with advancing and providing the needs of Proctors productions; setting labor calls, renting equipment, arranging artist hospitality/accommodations/transport, and assisting with event settlement. This position is available in the Fall or Spring. Ideal candidates have an interest in production and/or company management, are detail-oriented, self-sufficient and have a positive attitude. A valid driver’s license is required.
Dance, directing, acting, production, film internships
The School of Performing Arts at Proctors offers a full summer of creative and performing arts programs in dance, theatre, music, film and more for all ages and skill levels. Students learn from industry professionals who provide pre-professional training in the arts. Internships with the Summer Programs provide students with experience in the following areas of arts education- directing, film production, acting, and dance. Some interns will serve as teaching assistants to professional teaching artists. Our Camps serve ages 6 – 19. Each internship is tailored to the intern’s interest, skills and time availability. This internship reports to the Art Director. Responsibilities can include creation of a variety of promotional advertising pieces that include media-ready text, graphics and photos, graphic preparation, color production and layout of promotional advertising, managing creative service requests and organization of all collateral produced. Ideal candidates have working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, experiencewith layout design, production and offset printing preparation, are able to work independently, be self-starting and have good interpersonal demeanor. A portfolio review will be necessary.
Special events / Relationships internship
This internship reports to the Relationship Department. The department is responsible for special events, donor relations, corporate sponsorship and fundraising for both Proctors and theREP. Responsibilities include planning and executing fundraising events, prepare and deliver donor communications and events (which can include scheduling backstage events), assisting with solicitation efforts, collecting data for potential donors, patrons or prospective donors. This position is available in the Fall, Spring and Summer, some nighttime and weekend hours may be required. Ideal candidates will be interested in planning and executing events, working in a non-profit industry, be detailed oriented, have customer service experience, be organized and have moderate computer skills.
Education & community engagement internship
This internship reports to the Education Program Manager. Responsibilities can include assisting in creation of Education Department marketing materials such as the Season Brochure and the School of the Performing Arts Brochures; attending marketing, programming and education meetings; assisting in marketing strategies for programs and research. This position is available in the Spring and Summer. Ideal candidates will be interested in the performing and visual arts, be detail-oriented, be organized, have good interpersonal demeanor and moderate computer skills.
These internships report directly to a member of the Marketing team. The marketing department is a dynamic department that manages the marketing plans and community outreach for Proctors and theREP. Responsibilities can involve dissemination of marketing materials, assisting with community outreach, participating in marketing meetings and brainstorming, researching outreach techniques, working with street teams, assisting with community activities and events, contributing to social media and other duties as assigned. Although we attempt to provide each intern with a well-rounded marketing agency experience, specialization is available in one or more of the following disciplines:
Copywriting / content development
Videography / editing
These internships are available in the Fall, Spring and Summer. Ideal candidates will have basic computer skills, experience with social media and a passion for theatre.
Television production internship
This internship reports to the Open Stage Media Production Manager. Proctors was designated as manager and operator of public, educational and government access cable television by the City of Schenectady in December 2010 and spurred the creation of a new broadcast entity, Open Stage Media at Proctors (OSM). Responsibilities can include programming (includes in-putting shows into server and scheduling), video editing, Masterminds preparation, social media engagement and record keeping. This position is available in the Fall, Spring or Summer. Experience with computers and Microsoft Office are required. Ideal candidates will be detail-oriented, have good interpersonal demeanor and ability to self-start projects.

Internships at theREP
Technical and Production Internship
(Not available between May and September.)
This internship assists the Production Manager and assigned shop manager. This position will focus on one of four disciplines; props, costumes, lighting, and sound or set construction depending on the technical needs of the shows of that season. Ideal candidates will have a minimum of two years technical experience or other relevant job training. Interns must be able to work independently, be detail-oriented and a self-starter.
Research and dramaturgy internship works closely with the Assistant to the Artistic Director. This position will gather information and research for the study guides that are sent out to teachers for the student matinees and touring productions. This position will also assist with the NEXT ACT! PLAY FESTIVAL. Ideal candidates will be detail-oriented, interested in theatre and have previous writing and play reading experience. Please submit a brief writing sample, 500 words or less, with application.
Company Management internship
Under our Company Manager, this intern will work one on one with visiting artists, making sure the day-to-day needs of all company members are taken care of. In addition, the intern will have a role in our on site casting office. Duties include: set up and clean up of cast meals, compiling information for visiting artists and members of the press, creating welcome baskets, and filing casting paperwork. It’s a great opportunity to experience our company as a whole.
