Spotted Zebra Learning Center teams with CDTA and Proctors

SCHENECTADY—Spotted Zebra Learning Center has teamed with CDTA and Proctors to initiate a new program, which brings the school’s Bizzy Beez Activity Center to local venues, expanding opportunities for families with children on the spectrum.

For almost 15 years, Spotted Zebra’s facility on Computer Drive in Albany has been giving both special needs students and mainstream preschoolers a place for balanced learning. At the center, occupational, physical and speech therapists, as well as psychologists, provide on-site services, engaged play and education.

Now, with the donation of a bus from CDTA, Spotted Zebra can take its Bizzy Beez Activity Center on the road, with the vehicle providing transport of the various games, toys, light tables and furniture that make up a sensory gymnasium.

Proctors approached Spotted Zebra through independent promoter Jim Anderson, and after a few trials, offered its first official run Sunday, in association with a matinee performance of “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I.”

The sensory gym, staffed by Spotted Zebra specialists, offers children a personalized level of stimulation, allowing the entire family to participate in and enjoy public performances and events. Proctors plans to work with Spotted Zebra for many family entertainment entries in the 2018–2019 season, with free sensory gyms opening one hour before show time and continuing to provide support throughout the performance.

“We’re so proud and excited to be able to offer this opportunity to the families of the Capital Region,” says Proctors Audience Development and Retention SpecialistHeather Rutski. “Our goal is always to serve the entire community, and having the Bizzy Beez Activity Center visit us on site just feels right.”

“This gift from CDTA is a godsend,” says Spotted Zebra founder Sheri Townsend. “We’re now able to serve even more families, and all children are welcome at the traveling centers. Proctors has a real commitment to families, and we’re so glad to start this journey with them, by bringing Bizzy Beez to State Street.”
