Village People

Classic dance group brings “Macho Man,” “YMCA,” “In the Navy” and more to Schenectady

Recipients of a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (6529 Hollywood Boulevard, between Liberace and Betty Grable!), the one-of-a-kind Village People is synonymous with great dance music.

Their collective impact on the international groove has earned them the title of ‘The Kings of Disco,’ and the six-man group has sold more than 100 million recordings worldwide, including pioneering, floor-shaking hits like “San Francisco/In Hollywood,” “Macho Man,” “YMCA,” “In the Navy,” “Go West,” “Can’t Stop the Music” and more.
Over the past few years, Village People—appearing at Proctors, 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20—have performed a full schedule of concerts, festivals, universities, fairs and casinos throughout the United States as well as Canada, Brazil, France, South Africa, England, Finland, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Romania, Japan, Mexico, Australia, Poland and much more. The Guinness Book of World Records certified the combo’s Sun Bowl appearance on December 31, 2008 as the world’s largest “YMCA” dance with over 40,000 fans “doing the YMCA moves” while the group performed.

The band was recently seen on The Arsenio Hall Show, Fox’s The Wendy Williams Show and NBC’s The Singing Bee with Joey Fatone. Recent ad spots include American Express with Ellen Degeneres and Beyonce; Wonderful Pistachios; and Miracle Whip with Susan Boyle, Lance Bass and Wynonna Judd.

Village People also starred in the Nancy Walker-directed feature Can’t Stop the Music, which remains a world-wide cult favorite, over 30 years after its release. Village People hits have also been heard on dozens of other major motion picture soundtracks, including Down Periscope, Wayne’s World II, Adams Family Values and In and Out, among others.

Village People are Ray Simpson (Police Officer), Alexander Briley (G.I./Military), Felipe Rose (Native American), Eric Anzalone (Biker), Bill Whitefield (Construction Worker) and Jim Newman (Cowboy).
